Here's the back I carved for my current acoustic project - the wood is black walnut. It's carved very similar to the way you would do an archtop; it is carved inside and outside. The thinnest part - at the peak - is about 1/4" thick. I milled it flat along the bottom for easy glue up to the kerfing & end blocks. The shape is really ergonomic...I'm sure I'll be cutting more of these! Here's a side view: a skew view of the back right off the machine a frontal view of the machined part a frontal view after the first sanding pass Trev |

That seems like a pretty heavy piece of wood for an acoustic back (1/4" thick at the thinnest). Seems like it'll be a good reflector (its job) but might make the guitar really back heavy? Can't wait to hear about the results both sound and balance-wise because it's a really interesting concept (it would also be easier from a production standpoint, if it works out). |

For what it's worth the back has a pretty interesting tap tone. It's higher pitched than your average acoustic back...but it has a very bell-like ring to it. |
